Christmas in the time of COVID

By now it’s old news that 2020 has been a trying year for all of us. I know a lot of people haven’t been too excited about the Christmas season.

From the perspective of someone who never took Christmas seriously for a long time… and then took Christmas seriously for a few years… and then went back to not really taking it seriously anymore, here is my advice:

  • Toss all the expectations you have about Christmas right out the window.
  • Remember we are in a temporary state of being. We won’t be like this forever. One day soon all this will all be in past. Keep buckling down. Lets all do our part. Stay focused. Keep the energy and spirits up.
  • Engage in whatever healthy endeavors help you destress and reconnect with this majestic place called earth. I said healthy, sinner!
  • Remember that Christmas is about the celebration of Christ’s birth. It’s a time for excited children (both young and old) and charitable acts. All the rest is just added on muck.
  • Let’s try and take this time to be thankful for what we have. It’s good for the soul. Count life’s blessings and try very hard not think of all those people who did their best to piss you right the f off.
  • Look at technology as a blessing. We can call, we can video chat, we can drive up and we can blog! In other words, it’s much easier to be safe than it ever was before.
  • Remember that most all of us have had an f-ed up year, too. Don’t be so freakin self-involved. Make a point to pay more attention to me now! Ha, ha 😁
  • Take pleasure in the smallest of things:
    • Sip beloved holiday beverages: eggnog, hot chocolate, peppermint lattes, spiked Christmas punch, the same beer you drink all the rest of the year, whatever
    • Listen to your favorite holiday music… mine being anything but Christmas music… except for “Oh Holy Night” sung by Josh Grobin… simply magnificent! And of course most of the classics like Bing Crosby or Perry Como…. or Michael Buble… Nat King Cole… Mariah Carey… ok I guess I like more than a few
    • Watch lots of great movies. Lately I’ve been enjoying old Hitchcock films on TCM. I love how they still refer to them as “pictures.” Strangely endearing!
    • Eat cookies… it’s near to impossible to be sad while eating a Christmas cookie.
  • Lastly, don’t forget to have a great holiday season, just for spite!

  1. You have hit the Corona nail right on the head Adora. Covid can not screw up Christmas, only people can do that. We may not be together with family, but we can virtually be there…thanks tech. We may not share a family meal on the 25th…but we have plenty to eat. We may not raise a glass together…but we will raise a glass to those we love. We may not be in the same house…but we all have a roof over our heads. Christmas Spirit is more than just what we want…it is about what we have. Stay well and get ready to sing Auld Lang Syne to a Dumpster Fire of a year. Merry Christmas. Allan

  2. Your warning against self-preoccupation is both critical and will likely go unheeded by many (I hope not). Some of the best things in life happen and can be known when we forget about ourselves for awhile. Thank you for reminding me of this, Adora! Merry Christmas!

    1. Yes that is very true… although notice that I also say: “Make a point to pay more attention to me now!”
To a certain extent we are all guilty of being self-serving. It’s human nature after all. 🙂
